Resolution 2025.04.02-1

In support of People for Climate Action’s List of Critical City Climate Actions

WHEREAS the 45th District Democrats’ platform states we believe “addressing the climate and ecological crisis is humankind’s greatest and most urgent challenge” and supports “a rapid transition to 100% renewable energy and a net-zero carbon emission economy, on a timetable based on best-available science;” and

WHEREAS worldwide scientific consensus affirms that our best chance to stabilize our critical climate systems requires heat-trapping gas pollution to be rapidly reduced to zero by 2050, and accordingly, the State of Washington has legally pledged to reduce such emissions to 45% below 1990 levels by 2030, 70% by 2040, and 95% with the goal of net-zero by 2050; and

WHEREAS achieving these desired goals requires government actions at every level—federal, state, county and city—and cities have unique opportunities and obligations in this collective effort; and

WHEREAS most of the climate pollution in our cities comes from two sectors, Transportation and Existing Buildings, and a team of volunteers from People for Climate Action (PCA) from different cities in King County has developed a list of twelve critical actions focused on these areas that are necessary for any city to lower emissions to the required levels by 2050;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the 45th District Democrats sign on in support of PCA’s List of Critical City Climate Actions and further advocate that the cities of Duvall, Kirkland, Redmond, and Sammamish incorporate these actions into their policies and plans.

Adopted April 2, 2025
