Resolution 2025.04.02-2

Recognizing and Responding to a Constitutional Crisis

WHEREAS the Executive Branch of the US Government has taken actions—including dismantling federal agencies, impounding congressionally-approved funds, and defying federal court rulings—that violate the separation of powers as outlined in Articles I, II, and III of the U.S. Constitution; and

WHEREAS Congress has in some cases failed to defend its constitutional responsibilities and uphold the authority of the Judiciary; and

WHEREAS these developments raise the alarming possibility of a Constitutional Crisis precipitated by escalating violations of constitutional norms and processes; and

WHEREAS the 45th District Democrats believe a robust, coordinated response from state and local officials is essential to protect our democracy should such a crisis occur;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the 45th District Democrats expect our elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels to adopt clear criteria to recognize a Constitutional Crisis and to prepare by identifying likely scenarios; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the 45th District Democrats call on our elected officials to develop and coordinate comprehensive response plans—within and across states—to defend constitutional governance and the rule of law; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the 45th District Democrats instruct our leadership to share this resolution with relevant government leaders and Democratic Party organizations in King County and Washington State, and urge similar resolutions be adopted elsewhere to ensure broad awareness and preparedness.
